‘Shock and Awe’ Twelve Years On: Flashback to My Iraq War Opposition

Twelve years ago today, the US government unleashed “shock and awe” on Iraq. We were assured the invasion would be a cakewalk, wouldn’t cost much if anything at all, and that democracy would break out all over the Middle East after Iraq’s “liberation.” We all know how that worked out.

I was strongly opposed to the invasion from the beginning. Here I am in the House International Relations Committee in September, 2002, questioning then-Secretary of State Colin Powell about US evidence that war was necessary. I think it is very important to remember how we were led to war and what have been the consequences of that foolish policy:
