In August, Abdul El-Sayed defeated Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary, making El-Sayed the Democratic nominee for United States Senate for the state of Michigan. Though the primary is long over, on Friday, Stevens, who is a Democratic US House of Representatives member, came out swinging against El-Sayed.
Stevens demanded that El-Sayed condemn an advertisement that had been put out in support of his campaign by a third party. The reason: Stevens declared that the advertisement that she described as claiming “Jews are responsible for America’s economic woes” is antisemitic.
There is just one problem. The advertisement does not blame Jewish people for anything. In fact, it does not criticize anyone based on ethnicity or religion. Rather, the advertisement features two people talking about the billions of dollars that the US government spends to benefit the government of Israel, including to pay “for killing Palestinians.” That spending, they further note, means that a portion of the cost is imposed on each American, while the Israel government that is heavily subsidized by the US provides “universal healthcare.”

Shouting “antisemitism” is increasingly losing its punch as more people falsely claim that criticism of Israel is antisemitism. People have learned to expect this deceit and reject the allegation until proof is provided that shows validity. In this case that proof is wanting.
