In 2011 the US backed the “Arab Spring” which overthrew military dictator Hosni Mubarak in Egypt, in the name of democracy. But US officials soon soured on the democratically-elected Muhammad Morsi so they supported a military dictator who overthrew him, al-Sisi. Now the elected Morsi is going to jail for arresting some protestors, while Sisi retains US support after killing more than a thousand of his political opponents. As usual, the Ron Paul Liberty Report brings a different perspective:

Thousands are desperate to escape from a Libya that is increasingly in the hands of ISIS and other murderous gangs. This past week more than a thousand drowned in the Mediterranean on rickety boats. The mainstream media will never report the real cause of this mass exodus, the 2011 NATO attack on Libya. As usual, the case to bomb the country was largely manufactured by special interests. Today President Obama held an extraordinary event to announce that in January the US had killed two hostages in Pakistan. One was an American, a USAID contractor, the other an Italian aid worker. Presumably these two were killed by a drone strike as the US targeted what it believed was an al-Qaeda headquarters building. This was big news, but what was really interesting — but not as covered by the mainstream media — is that other drone strikes in that time period killed two other American citizens who were accused of joining al-Qaeda. These Americans were not tried and found guilty of terrorism. They were executed on orders from the president. The Ron Paul Liberty Report today takes a look at this disturbing development:

Although Saudi Arabia just announced the end of its bombing campaign against Yemen — they seem to have run out of targets — the US administration is still sending more warships to the region. This week there were two more murders of prominent Ukrainian opposition figures, bringing the total to perhaps 12. While the US government was quick to suggest that Russian president Putin was behind the killing of a minor opposition figure in February, the US has so far remained silent at the ongoing political killings in Ukraine. Last year Washington flew into a  panic over an ebola outbreak in parts of Africa. USAID spent $1.4 billion constructing eleven treatment centers in Africa, but nine of those did not treat a single patient. The locals using hygienic products and traditional methods solved the crisis before the US top-down approach. USAID spent like a drunken sailor, with much of that one and a half billion going to well-connected “NGOs” and military contractors, and the people of Africa saw no real benefit. However, it was a “successful” test of the US Africa Command (AFRICOM), which deployed 3,000 US troops to “fight” ebola. Tune in to the Ron Paul Liberty report for the full story of this boondoggle:

Senate leadership pretends to be defending the constitutional authority of the Legislative Branch in demanding an up or down vote on any deal President Obama makes on Iran. But of course this is just a cover for their real intent to blow up any deal that would lift sanctions, show Iran to be a rational actor, and move regime change off the table. The problem is this is not a US-Iran bilateral agreement. It is an international deal that, if Congress has its way, would result in sanctions being lifted on Iran by all its major trading partners except the US. In his Liberty Report, Ron Paul discusses the new compromise legislation that passed in the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee this week and what we might expect in the coming clash between Obama and the neocons:

President Obama recently issued an executive order declaring Venezuela an “extraordinary” threat to the United States. Both he and his officials knew this was not true, but the determination had to be made so that he could impose sanctions on the country. At almost the same time, the president attended an historic face-to-face meeting with Cuban leader Raul Castro. This is one (positive) step toward normalizing relations with the island. Why the schizophrenia? Meanwhile, recently-declared presidential candidate Marco Rubio pretends to bring fresh new ideas and policies to the race while demanding that the 50 year fruitless embargo of Cuba remain in place. The police brutality evident in the recent shooting of the unarmed Walter Scott is a symptom of a bigger problem, which is blind trust that the government exists to make us safer. After 9/11, Americans were told they must give up their liberty at home and endorse endless wars abroad in order for the government to save them from terrorism. But instead of safety Americans have gotten in return a government that is increasingly brutal toward them and increasingly sees them as the enemy. The Obama Administration’s “pivot to Asia” seems to only have a military component. Unfortunately it is not a pivot toward more trade or more peaceful exchanges. This past week US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter went to Tokyo to celebrate a shift in Japan’s defense policy that would allow them to engage militarily should their friends and allies come under attack. It is a slippery slope toward involvement in Washington’s regime change operations worldwide.
