President Donald Trump’s promise to send 5,000 dollars to each adult American citizen after the November election has one big contingency explicitly built in — that Republicans must first keep control of the United States House of Representatives and Senate in that election. It also has another big unstated contingency — that Trump follows through on his promise.
Over at CNBC, Luke Fountain pointed out in a Sunday article that Trump has an imperfect history of carrying through on similar promises. Trump’s promised 5,000 dollars “DOGE dividends” and 2,000 dollars “tariff rebates” in 2025, as well as 200 dollars prescription drug cards for Medicare beneficiaries in Trump’s first presidential term, failed to materialize.
