Liberland Salutes US Rep. Thomas Massie for His Service to Liberty

by | May 23, 2026

For more than a decade, Representative Thomas Massie has been one of the strongest defenders of constitutional government, individual liberty, and the principles of the American Founding Fathers in the United States Congress. Since taking office in 2012, Massie has built a reputation as an independent voice for limited government and civil liberties – principles that strongly resonate with many citizens and supporters of Liberland.

Many Liberlanders were disappointed to see Massie lose his recent primary election after a heavily financed and aggressive campaign against him. The race showed how difficult it can be for principled, independent politicians to withstand coordinated attacks backed by enormous financial and media power.

There has long been significant overlap between supporters of Liberland and supporters of former Congressman Ron Paul, who received Liberland’s Order of Merit in August 2025 shortly after his 90th birthday.

The same is true of Thomas Massie. Both men earned respect within liberty circles for challenging political orthodoxy and defending constitutional principles even when it came at political cost.

Liberland officials have met with Representative Massie several times. In September 2018, a Liberland delegation visited his congressional office to present the history and founding principles of Liberland. The delegation discussed Liberland’s commitment to liberty, voluntary governance, free markets, and modern governance systems inspired by the writings of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison while incorporating blockchain technology.

In July 2024, President Vít Jedlička shared the stage with Representative Massie at FreedomFest in Las Vegas, reflecting the growing dialogue between liberty-minded movements around the world.

Outside politics, Massie has always stood apart from the typical image of a modern congressman. An inventor and engineer, he earned degrees in electrical and mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. On his cattle farm in Garrison, Kentucky, he personally built an off-the-grid timber-frame home using wood and stone from his own property. Powered by solar energy and a repurposed Tesla battery system, the home reflects Massie’s practical self-reliance and technical creativity. He has often called himself the “greenest member of Congress.”

Massie also earns admiration for his opposition to runaway spending, taxpayer-funded foreign aid, mass surveillance, and restrictions on civil liberties. He opposed pandemic lockdowns and famously forced Congress to return to Washington to vote on emergency measures in person. He never voted to raise taxes and has long supported auditing the Federal Reserve.

He was also the co-author of bipartisan legislation requiring the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. The measure passed overwhelmingly and was later signed into law by President Trump, though full disclosure has still not occurred.

Massie’s independence won him admirers not only across the liberty movement, but among conservatives and liberals alike. The late conservative commentator Charlie Kirk frequently praised him as one of his favorite members of Congress. Representative Ro Khanna (D.-Calif.) wrote after the election: “… my good friend Thomas Massie lost tonight. I’m angered by the smears on his character. He lost because he had the guts to take on the Epstein class.”

A record-breaking $35 million was spent in Massie’s primary, mainly consisting of injections from a small cabal of billionaire donors and specific interest groups opposed to Massie’s maverick votes on foreign policy and foreign aid.

Massie’s primary opponent did not show up to a single debate and – somewhat hilariously – neglected to delete AI prompts from the text of his social media posts. Massie received over 1,500 donations from small donors in Kentucky, whereas his opponent only had a total of 70 donors in Kentucky, according to FEC filings.

Political campaigns are often rough, but many of the accusations directed at Massie during the recent primary campaign badly distorted his record and beliefs. The campaign against him also cynically exploited the political trust and emotional instincts of many older voters through relentless advertising and sensationalized attacks. For many supporters of liberty, the campaign was another reminder of how hard it is for truly independent voices to survive in political systems increasingly ruled by massive fundraising operations and nonstop media warfare.

Regardless of electoral outcomes, Thomas Massie’s record defending constitutional government and individual liberty has earned him lasting respect among many Liberlanders and supporters of freedom around the world. We hope he will continue to play a leading role in the liberty movement for many years to come.
